This past week, McDonald’s (in Ontario, at least) offered their new buttermilk biscuits for free during breakfast hours on February 9 and 10. Since they already hooked me on their coffee by using this method, I pass through their drive-thru window a few times a week, usually in the morning.
To my surprise, on Feb. 9 the drive-thru was lined with cars almost to the entrance of the parking lot. So I did what any (non-lazy) person would do and parked my car and walked in. It was packed to the brim! All this for a free buttermilk biscuit.
Since the crowds showed up in great numbers, I was late for work. As I got into the office, my Pastor and I got to chatting about McD’s strategy: Get them hooked (for Free), and then make them pay for the rest of their lives. I guess it kind of sounds like a drug dealer’s world. Then we thought, about the church.
The church offers the free gift of eternal life, through Christ Jesus, and many churches are empty. Could it be that we are not offering anything new? Could it be that we are serving them stale messages and old programs that are outdated? [Understand me for a second. The Gospel message is timeless; the message never changes, but the methods have to!]
What do you think? Why is McDonald’s able to pack out the place, but the church can’t? I’d hate to think that McDonald’s is offering something more worthwhile.
Thought?
