Creating A Magical Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2011 — 1 Comment

One year, 8 months and 8 days ago, I married the girl of my dreams.

My Bride

Today is Valentine’s Day and we are blessed to celebrate our second one as husband and wife. I always enjoy the responsibility of romancing my wife and today is no exception. Last year we did the restaurant thing and spent a wad of cash on average food and over-priced flowers. This year, I wanted to make it personal and here’s what I did to make it magical:

Egg Breakfast Sandwich

Sending Her Off To Work

  • Even though it was my day off, I woke at 5:50am to make Pris’ breakfast. I made her a heart-shaped egg breakfast sandwich
  • I assembled her lunch.
  • Prepared her water bottle (because every good teacher and singer has one, right?).
  • Kissed her goodbye.

Welcoming Her Home

  • I had all the lights out and had a bunch of tea lights in small, red glass, candle holders placed all over the room.

Dinner Plans

  • Instead of going out for dinner I decided to make it myself. Nothing says “I love you” like a gourmet meal prepared by an ambitious husband.
  • On the dinner table I placed a bottle of wine and a card for her along with our two place-settings.
  • On the menu was Spinach Salad with strawberries, goat cheese, and roasted walnuts.
  • The main course was red pepper, goat cheese and basil stuffed chicken breasts.
  • As a side, I was going to serve grilled broccoli but in the heat of the moment I actually forgot all about it. (I’m glad Pris graciously overlooked that :) )
  • Lately we’ve been craving Cinnabon but we’ve never actually gone for it. With this in mind, after our meal I popped in Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls so that the whole house would smell cinnamontastic. WIN!

Why am I taking time to go through all this? Because a magical Valentine’s Day happens when two people don’t just fall in love, but walk in love. I realized that spending a whole day sweating in the kitchen means more to my wife than going out to a restaurant and buying her dinner and roses. Showing a woman that you love her does so much more than telling her you love her. We need to be willing to invest time, thoughtfulness, and work in our relationships if we want to see the magic happen!

In short, men, if you haven’t shown her you love her year-round, today is simply not enough! Don’t fall in love today. Walk in love today, and every day, and I guarantee that every day will feel like you’re creating a magical Valentine’s Day.

To Priscilla, my beautiful and amazing wife: I love you, even though you fell asleep right after dessert. Happy Valentine’s Day! 1-4-3 <3
